Where Were the “Planners” When We Needed Them?

The February 2010 issue of the American Planning Association’s magazine, Planning, gives a brief postmortem on the 2016 bid.  The article asks the questions that no one in Chicago seemingly wants to face:

“What does a city gain, or lose, by hosting the Olympics? Did Chicago lose? Or did it win?” The author then goes on to tell his readers what No Games Chicago had been saying all along:

“Unfortunately, hosting the Games gets no medals as an urban development strategy. Host efforts tend to be over promised and underfunded, and seldom achieve the goals local organizers set out.” Download the full article.

Aren’t there some members of the American Planning Association in Chicago? Where were they when the bid was being proposed and marketed to the citizens of Chicago and the rest of Illinois?

You guys are idiots! The thing is you guys are complaining about a total lie. It would be very funny now to see Rio go into a deeper hole than what it is already digging itself in. Chicago was 100 precent capable of doing this. So, yeah, if you lose the bid, you lose the Olympics. If you win the bid, you win the Olympics, it’s that simple.

Brazil is the new Mexico. When Mexico City hosted the Summer Olympics in 1968, they were a developing nation. Even though, Mexico has a lot of social issues from corruption, crime, poverty, etc.

After the games are over, Mexico was able to emerge & become a well-developed country like the US, Canada, Europe, Japan & Australia.

If you lose the bid, the city wins tremendously because organizing the Olympics is expensive & must be carefully-planned as in no room for error. If you win the bid, you lose tremendously because construction completion has to be on time & financial planning has to be on budget.

The Athens, Torino, Beijing, Vancouver, London games are over budget & in the red deficit. If the global economic crisis didn’t happen the games are worth hosting & in the green surplus.

My bid question that is still unanswered is, WHAT MAKES YOU SO SURE THAT CHICAGO WOULD GO OVERBUDGET? Did the tooth fairy come to your bed and tell you guys that?
