Where Was Frank Deford When We Needed Him?
Frank Deford has covered sports for major media outlets for decades. He does a weekly op-ed piece on NPR. Today he commented on the coats of mega-events, such as the Olympics and the World Cup.
“…as Vancouver goes about the nasty business of trying to pay off this winter’s Olympics, and as we approach the World Cup and South Africa sees its bill soar toward $5 billion, it’s worth reminding cities and countries that think they can be the apple of the world’s eye just by hosting a sports spectacular, that there are only two words you can be guaranteed will always highlight every Olympics and every World Cup nowadays, and those are: over budget.”
Frank, we could’ve used your voice last year. Oh well, we’ll remember what you said the next time an American mayor trots out the lies and exaggerations to justify their city’s Olympic bid.
What makes you so sure that the Chicago 2016 financial plan would go over budget? You guys don’t even have proof on that. Apparently, you guys don’t want to see an American Olympic medalist win a gold meadal here in Chicago, and listen to what our country stands for while celebrating, 15 minutes from your house.
Tokyo’s bid is better than Chicago. Nobody from the US wants to look & see Tokyo’s bid. Tokyo have a Plan B, better financial backing, best transportation & internet system in the world. The United States don’t need the Olympics since it has hosted so many times & will win all the medals 6 years from now.
Though, it would be wierd for the rotation to go from Beijing, to London, to Tokyo.
What about the 2020 bid?

Scott,
That news was dated September 24, 2010. Here’s an update, as of October 01, 2010. I hope it’s true that the US is not bidding the 2020 Summer Olympics. http://www.ctpost.com/sports/article/USOC-pulls-out-of-bidding-for-2020-Summer-Olympics-673638.php
Since the recent World Cup was a success in South Africa, I hope Cape Town wins the 2020 bid. That would be great to see an African city, South Africa & the African continent as a whole since it never hosted the games.
I hope the IOC is not doing the US & Europe a favor to host the games because they’ve hosted so many times in different cities. The Olympics should be for cities that have a well-organized financial backing & well-detailed construction work by completing & meeting it’s deadline schedule on time.
I actually think different. Doha should be awarded the 2020 Olympics, because like Africa, the Arab World never hosted an Olympics. There is a lot of turmoil in the region. The Olympics would give the world a better understanding of Arab culture
